Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) introduced articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, citing a “pattern of refusal to recuse” themselves from cases where they have personal or financial connections, as well as a “failure to disclose” millions of dollars in gifts over several decades.
“The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large,” Ocasio-Cortez stated in a press release. She emphasized that the justices’ actions undermine the rule of law and the integrity of American democracy, which she described as a clear justification for impeachment.
The impeachment resolution against Justice Thomas includes articles related to his refusal to recuse himself from cases involving his spouse’s legal and financial interests. Meanwhile, the resolution against Justice Alito cites his failure to recuse from cases where he had personal biases or prejudices concerning parties involved.
Both resolutions accuse the justices of failing to disclose financial incomes, gifts, reimbursements, property interests, liabilities, and transactions. This alleged lack of transparency and accountability raises serious concerns about the impartiality of the Supreme Court.
Ocasio-Cortez’s bold move highlights growing concerns about judicial ethics and transparency at the highest levels of the judiciary. As the resolutions move forward, they are expected to spark significant debate about the accountability of Supreme Court justices and the measures needed to uphold the integrity of the nation’s legal system.
