Andrea Lawful-Sanders, a radio host from Philadelphia, has resigned from WURD Radio after admitting she used questions provided by President Joe Biden’s aides during an interview. The station, Pennsylvania’s only African American-owned and operated radio station, emphasized its commitment to editorial independence, stating that Lawful-Sanders arranged the interview without management’s knowledge or approval.
Lawful-Sanders revealed on Instagram that WURD accepted her resignation. The controversy arose after she admitted on CNN’s “First of All” that she asked Biden four pre-approved questions during a 4 July interview. She mentioned that she received eight questions from Biden’s team and chose four to ask.
WURD Radio’s CEO, Sara Lomax, condemned the use of pre-supplied questions, stating it undermines Black voices in the media. The station plans to review its policies to ensure trust and independence with its listeners.
The situation mirrored another incident with Wisconsin radio host Earl Ingram, who also received pre-approved questions for an interview with Biden. Both hosts have significant African American audiences and aired interviews with Biden on the same day.
Lawful-Sanders expressed gratitude for her time at WURD and hinted at future plans. Biden, who faced criticism for his debate performance and an ABC interview, used these radio interviews to ask voters to judge his presidency by his actions over the past three-and-a-half years rather than a single debate.
